Pools here don't close for winter, but they slow down. A few hours in spring saves a green pool in June.
Most San Gabriel Valley pools run all year, with shorter pump hours in winter. Spring is when the water warms, the trees drop pollen, and algae gets its first chance. A little work now keeps the summer easy.
Winter debris and early pollen load the filter. Clean the cartridges or grids now, and check the o-rings and pressure gauge while it is open.
Warmer water needs more filtration. Add hours back to the schedule as temperatures rise. With a salt system, more pump hours also means more chlorine.
Bring a sample to the store. We test chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, stabilizer, and salt, and write out what to add and in what order. Stabilizer often runs low after winter rain.
Fire the heater before you need it. Listen to the pump for new noises. Look for drips at the pad. It is easier to schedule a repair in April than in July.
